Norman A. Birks (b. 1892 near Sheffield, Yorkshire), Lieutenant, 9th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, seconded to the Motor Machine Gun Service, served on the Western Front, 1914-1916. He was transferred to the RFC (Royal Flying Corps) in 1916 and served with No. 29 Squadron on the Western Front.
